Punta Conejo sits just west of Salina Cruz, a world-class pointbreak that has earned its reputation as one of Mexico’s finest rights. The setup is classic Oaxaca: a long, peeling sand-bottom wave that wraps into a wide-open bay, offering rides that can stretch an astonishing 500 meters when conditions align. Access requires a 4x4 and ideally a local guide, as the terrain is rugged. And yes, with the proliferation of surf camps in the area, expect company on the peak—especially when the swell is pumping. This wave demands a long-period south swell, with the sweet spot arriving from SSE to SSW. Low to mid tide is your window, and a clean west to southwest breeze will groom the face into a rippable canvas. When it fires, Punta Conejo delivers surf from waist-high to well overhead, with triple-overhead sets not uncommon on the bigger pulses. The wave is a forgiving right-hander that offers both power and length, but it’s the consistency of the ride that keeps surfers coming back—ten-turn affairs and occasional inside barrels are the rewards for those who show up and show respect. Though the wave can be inconsistent at times, when it’s on, it’s a magnet for intermediate to expert surfers. Shortboards, fishes, funboards, and longboards all have their day here, depending on swell size and tide. The vibe can get territorial, so patience and humility go a long way. Best Surf Season (April - September)

Punta Conejo's best windows come when the Southern Hemisphere storm track is firing and the ocean delivers those long-period SSW/S swells. From April through September the average period sits securely in the 12.3-13.6s range, and the ideal wind percentage climbs to 40-42% in June, July, August and September. There is not a huge amount of overhead swell-most days run 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m)-but the waves have real power, clean shoulders and that smooth, lined-up feel that makes this stretch of Mexican coastline stand out.
