January: The Punchy NNW Winter Pulse

January brings some of the biggest average surf of the year to Punta Conejo, but the quality is kept in check by a short-period pulse and strong local winds. The average swell height comes in at around 6ft (1.8m), but the average period is only 8.9s-solid and punchy rather than long and glassy. The wave rose is dominated by NNW swell (37.3%), with a significant secondary SSW component (17.5%) and a chunk of due S energy (12.1%). That means mixing bowls of northern and southern hemi energy can produce crisscrossing lines, especially on the lower tide. The biggest sets, in the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range, almost all come from the NNW. Winds are predominantly from the NNW and N, together around 67% of the rose, and many of these are moderate to fresh-16.7% of the NNW sector blows at 20-30kph and 7.7% at 30-40kph. The ideal wind score is only 35%. Air temperatures average 24.4°C, water sits at 26.1°C and rainfall is minimal at 0.12 mm/day.
