Best Surf Season (November - February)

Troncones hits its stride from November through February, when the eastern Pacific storm track and Southern Hemisphere swell window combine with the region's most reliable offshore winds. Average wave heights sit in the fun-to-solid 1.2-1.3m (4-4.3ft) range with 13.4-13.5s periods - exactly the long-period, organized energy this SSW-facing beach loves. Ideal wind frequencies from the N-NNE-NE-ENE quadrant range from 46-54% during these months, meaning clean, glassy morning sessions and plenty of lined-up walls. When a fresh SSW/SW groundswell arrives, Troncones holds up beautifully under light offshore flow, making this the high-quality season at the spot.

Fair Surf Season (March - June)

From March through June the raw swell size starts to climb - 1.3-1.6m (4.3-5.2ft) - while periods remain in the 13.7-14.2s range. This is the classic Southern Hemisphere groundswell ramp-up, and Troncones sees a much larger percentage of 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) swell through April and May. The trade-off is the wind: ideal offshore frequencies drop to just 31-39%, and afternoon onshore SW/W wind becomes the default. The surf is often powerful, but you need to be on it early before the seabreeze and tropical moisture chop it up. For the patient surfer, these months still offer great waves between wind events.

Low Surf Season (July - October)

July through October is the quality trough at Troncones, despite the largest average swells of the year. Peak heights arrive in September at 1.7m (5.6ft), plus occasional 2.5m (8ft+) bomb sets from tropical cyclones in the East Pacific hurricane basin. But the monsoon and hurricane seasons bring a much higher percentage of SE/S/SSW winds, afternoon downpours and lumpy cross-shore energy; ideal wind frequencies are relatively scarce. Rainfall jumps to 7.65 mm/day in September, and water temps peak near 30.8°C. You can still score pumping 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) SSW/SW groundswell between tropical systems, but the number of truly clean, organized days is much lower. This is the late-summer/fall wildcard period - high energy, low consistency.
