Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (November - February)
The heart of winter delivers the most consistent surf for Ormond Beach. As the North Atlantic storm track ramps up, strong extratropical lows generate a steady diet of ENE to NE swell that wraps directly into the beach's east-northeast exposure. Offshore winds from the SW-W quadrant peak during these months, with ideal wind frequencies hitting 17-21%. Average wave heights sit in the 0.7-0.8m range, and periods averaging 8.0-8.5s produce punchy, rideable waves. While XXL swells are rare, the combination of clean offshore breezes and a reliable swell window makes this the go-to period for surfers.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & October)
Spring and early autumn are transitional windows where conditions can be hit or miss. In March and April, the jet stream begins to weaken, but occasional cold fronts still push through, delivering NE to E swell with periods around 8s. Offshore wind frequencies drop to 17-19%, and average wave heights slip to 0.6-0.7m – still enough for a fun, groveling session. October sees a similar setup: the Atlantic hurricane season adds a wildcard, with the potential for longer-period groundswell (8.4s average) from the E and ENE, but onshore wind from the north and east is a frequent spoiler.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer brings a dramatic shift. The Bermuda High dominates, steering persistent onshore easterly winds (E, ESE, SE) that plague the lineup. Offshore wind from the west becomes scarce, dropping to just 6-12% ideal conditions. Swell is dominated by short-period, wind-driven sea from the E and ESE – the worst possible direction for Ormond's ENE orientation. Wave heights average a meager 0.4-0.6m, often choppy and messy. While the occasional tropical storm can fire up a pulse of long-period E swell, the overwhelming reality is small, onshore slop. Best chase a different coast in summer.
