Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Atlantic cranks up the volume from late autumn through early spring, delivering the most consistent and quality surf of the year at Sunglow Pier. Average swell heights hover around the 0.7-0.8m mark with periods in the 8.0-8.5s range, providing punchy, rideable waves that are far from micro. The dominant swell directions — NE, ENE, and E — align perfectly with the pier's east-northeast exposure, allowing these groundswells to wrap in with decent shape. Offshore winds from the W/SW quadrant blow clean 19-21% of the time, thanks to frequent cold fronts sweeping across the Southeast. When a strong extratropical storm spins up in the North Atlantic, we can see heights push into the 1-1.5m fun zone and periods stretching to 10-12s, turning Sunglow into a legitimate shortboard and groveler playground. The combination of favorable swell angles and the highest percentage of offshore wind windows makes this the prime window for planning a session.

Fair Surf Season (September & October & April)

Shoulder months offer a mixed bag — the potential for decent surf is there, but consistency and wind become more of a gamble. September and October see a slight uptick in average heights to 0.7m with longer periods (8.4-8.9s), as the tropics and early-season North Atlantic lows begin to churn. East and ENE swells still dominate, but the ideal offshore wind window shrinks to only 12% of the time. You'll need to pick your windows carefully — often a morning glass-off with a lingering WSW breeze can clean up the lines before the seabreeze kicks in. April brings a similar story: heights drop slightly to 0.6m, periods hold around 8.0s, and offshore wind frequency improves to 17%, making it a solid transitional month. The swell mix is still heavily from the E/ENE quadrant, but the slower storm track means you'll often wait for a passing front to align the wind before the waves fade onshore — call it a sneaky good springtime sleeper.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles in with a frustrating pattern of small, weak swell and persistent onshore winds that plague Sunglow Pier from May through August. Average heights bottom out at 0.4-0.6m with periods struggling to reach 8.0s — resulting in mostly choppy, low-energy mushburgers. The dominant swell direction shifts to a frustrating ESE/SE bias, which is far from optimal for the east-northeast facing pier and rarely wraps in with any power. Even more problematic, the ideal offshore wind from the SW-W quadrant plummets to a mere 6-8% frequency. Instead, we see stubborn onshore flow from the E and NE quadrants (the exact directions that ruin the wave quality) dominating the wind fields. A stray tropical disturbance can fire a pulse of longer-period E swell into the region, but these events are fleeting and typically accompanied by unstable winds. For the most part, summer is a time to save the quiver and focus on water time rather than wave quality — low season is the honest call.
