Best Surf Season (December - March)

The northwest monsoon delivers the most consistent offshore wind window of the year at Sero Beach. Instead of the raw, trade-wind mess that dominates the middle of the year, December through March sees the prevailing flow swing into the N, WNW, NW and NNW quadrant. This is exactly the offshore direction Sero Beach needs. Swell heights are not huge, averaging 0.7-0.8m (2.3-2.6ft), but clean, rideable lines in the 0.5-1.5m (1.6-4.9ft) range are much more common. February is the statistical sweet spot with 61 percent ideal wind, while March adds a punch with 7.9s average periods and a strong SSE component. If you are after fun, rippable surf without the onshore wind machine, this is your window.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

These shoulder months mark the transition between the NW monsoon and the SE trades. April sees the swell window reopen properly, with SSE energy making up over 80 percent of the spectrum and the average size climbing to 1m (3.3ft). However, the wind becomes less reliable and onshore ESE to S flow starts to pick up. November is the mirror image, with winds becoming more variable again after the long trade-wind season. The surf averages 0.8m (2.6ft), and while the percentage of truly offshore days is still low, there are more windows of opportunity than in the heart of the trade season.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October, the South Pacific subtropical high pumps a persistent SSE to SE trade wind into the Coral Sea and onshore at Sero Beach. Wave heights actually peak during this period, reaching 1.3-1.5m (4.3-4.9ft) on average, with plenty of 1.5-2.5m (4.9-8.2ft) sets. Yet the prevailing onshore wind means the surface is almost always bumpy and windblown. Only 2-9 percent of the time does the wind turn offshore, and in July and August that number drops to just 2 percent. The Sero Beach faithful spend these months hunting for morning lulls or protected corners, not chasing perfect peelers.
