Best Surf Season (March - May)

While Patrokl is far from a world-class wave factory, the spring months offer the most consistent window for surfable conditions. During March, April, and May, the frequency of offshore winds from the west and northwest increases, with ideal wind percentages climbing above 10%—the highest of the year. Simultaneously, the sea begins to generate more swell from the southeast and south-southeast, which aligns with Patrokl's east-facing orientation. Sure, the average wave heights remain small (0.5-0.6m) and periods short (5-6s), but when a passing low-pressure system in the Sea of Japan sends a longer-period pulse, and the wind cooperates, you can find fun, rippable waves in the waist-high range. The key is to watch for synoptic setups that bring a SE swell combined with a light westerly breeze.

Fair Surf Season (October - February)

The winter half-year sees a slight uptick in average swell height to 0.7-0.8m, thanks to increased storm activity across the North Pacific and the Sea of Okhotsk. However, the dominant swell direction swings to the north and north-northwest—completely shadowed by the coastline for an east-facing beach. Most of the energy from these winter gales passes by Patrokl, leaving only background swell. Furthermore, the wind regime becomes dominated by strong northerly winds, which create choppy, onshore conditions and drop the ideal wind percentage to a meager 4-7%. The occasional westerly or northwesterly outflow from a passing cold front can briefly clean things up, but overall, it's a season of low-expectation surfing with a lot of flat days mixed in.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer at Patrokl is the quietest time of year. The average swell height bottoms out at 0.5m with periods of 4-5s, resulting in mostly micro to small, groveling waves. The swell direction shifts strongly to the south and southeast, which can produce some rideable waves, but the wind is the main problem. The prevailing southerly monsoon flow brings onshore winds from the S and SSE for the majority of the summer, degrading what little swell reaches the coast. Ideal offshore wind conditions occur only 6-9% of the time—usually during brief early morning hours or when a rare northerly surge pushes through. If you're desperate for a session, you might squeeze out some knee-high sliders on a longboard, but this is purely a low-season for dedicated surfers.
