Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with powerful extratropical cyclones marching across the ocean. This is prime time at Perranporth. Average swell heights consistently exceed 1.6m, peaking at 2.2m in January, while wave periods regularly hit the 10-14s range, delivering powerful, long-period groundswell. The dominant W and WSW swells pour into the WNW-facing beach, creating clean, rippable lines. Offshore winds from the east and southeast (ENE, E, ESE, SE) are most frequent in these months, with ideal wind percentages hovering around 18-20%, often accompanying high-pressure ridges that post-frontal clearance provides. This is when you can expect pumping, firing conditions with the best chance of epic, heavy swell.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)

As the jet stream retreats north, the energy dials back. Swell heights drop to a more manageable 1.1-1.3m, and periods shorten to 8.8-10.2s, resulting in average, punchy waves that are still rideable but lack the deep-water power of winter. The dominant westerly swell remains, but the ideal wind window (east through southeast) contracts slightly. April and September offer the best bets within this window, with 24% and 21% ideal wind respectively. Spring and early autumn often bring high-pressure setups that deliver clean, fun-sized surf under sunny skies, but you'll need to pick your days carefully as onshore winds (W, WSW, WNW) become more common, especially in May and June.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

Summer settles in, and Perranporth feels the heat of the Azores High. The Atlantic storm track weakens, and the fetch shrinks. Average swell heights barely clear 1.0-1.1m, with periods often sinking below 9s, producing choppy, messy, low-energy conditions. The dominant W and WNW swells are still present, but they're starved of power. The worst onshore winds (W, WSW, WNW) blow directly into the beach over half the time, especially with sea breezes added. Ideal offshore wind percentages drop to just 14-15%, making clean, groomed waves a rare commodity. This is the season for the grovel board or a flat spell, with only the occasional remnant tropical storm or cut-off low offering a brief pulse of relief.
