The North Atlantic shifts into high gear from October through March, delivering the largest and most consistent swell to Porth Neigwl. Average wave heights range from 1.9m to 2.5m, with periods often exceeding 10 seconds, translating to powerful, punchy surf. The dominant swell directions—WSW, W, and WNW—align perfectly with the beach's WNW exposure, resulting in clean, long-period waves when conditions align. However, this is also the period when onshore winds from the same quadrants are most frequent, with ideal offshore winds (ENE through SE) occurring only 16-20% of the time. The key is to watch for high-pressure systems settling over the British Isles or Scandinavia, which can produce light easterly winds and glassy conditions amid the winter swell. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) plays a crucial role: a strongly positive NAO phase often brings a relentless train of deep lows, delivering XL swell but with constant SW gales, while a negative NAO can stall the jet stream, leading to more variable winds and occasional surfing windows.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Spring and early autumn offer a sweet spot: the swell drops off from winter highs but remains rideable, and the frequency of clean offshore winds increases. In April, average wave heights hover around 1.6m with a 10.1s period, and ideal wind conditions climb to 24%—the highest of any month. May sees heights drop to 1.4m and periods shorten to 9.1s, but the wind is still favorable 22% of the time. September marks the return of autumn energy with 1.4m waves and a 9.5s period, and 21% offshore wind. These months deliver fun, rippable surf with fewer crowds and more manageable wind patterns. Swell directions are still dominated by W and WSW, but lighter wind speeds mean more rideable days overall. It's a transitional period where you can score clean waves without the full battering of winter.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at Porth Neigwl is a mixed bag—small and often messy. Average wave heights drop to just 1.2m, with periods shrinking to 8.2-8.7s, yielding weak, short-period swell that struggles to break cleanly on the beach. The wind pattern becomes the main spoiler: onshore breezes from the SW and W dominate, and the proportion of offshore winds plummets to 15-18%. This means many days are blown out or choppy. However, occasional pulses of longer-period swell from a distant storm can still light up the beach, especially if a ridge of high pressure provides light easterly winds. On those rare days, you'll find small but fun waves peeling along the banks. But for the most part, summer is a time to wait for a cold front to push through and reset the pattern.
