August: Big Swells Under a Winter Grip
August continues the winter assault. Average swell height remains at around 6-7ft (1.9m), with the period at 13.0s. SSW swell is again the dominant energy source at 71%, while S swell accounts for 17%. The distribution of heights is very similar to July, with almost half the observations in the 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) range and another 27% pushing into the 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) range. This is continuous, powerful, overhead-plus surf; El Silencio will be a beast on the bigger sets.

The 10-20kph band from SSW and SW is well established, producing frequent afternoon bumps. With water temperatures at 15.5°C and air at 16.8°C, it is one of the coldest periods of the calendar. Keep in mind that even when the head-high faces look inviting, a slight increase in wind speed will turn them into sectiony, blown-out lumps. Patience and a good wetsuit are mandatory.
