La Isla sits at the tip of Punta Hermosa, a classic Peruvian reef break that serves up some of the finest righthand waves in the region. This spot is pure quality when conditions align, especially during the prime surf season from March through September. Access is straightforward, which means when the swell fills in, the lineup fills up—expect company and be ready to share the peak. Wave heights range from head-high to triple overhead (1 to 3 meters), with consistent energy handling swell sizes from 3 to 10 feet. The dominant right peels fast and steep, throwing a thin lip that demands sharp reflexes, while the left offers a softer, more forgiving ride. Beware the bottom—urchin-crusted rock makes for tricky footing, so keep your feet light and your awareness high. Ideal swell direction spans South through West-Southwest, with the best winds coming from the North to East-Southeast quadrant. This wave is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers, though you'll see a mix of shortboards, step-ups, and the occasional longboard in the water. The local vibe can have an edge, but generally the energy stays mellow if you show respect. Keep your eyes on the ocean at all times—never turn your back on the sets. The environment is clean and inviting, but don’t let the beauty lull you; stay sharp, stay humble, and you’ll earn your share of memorable waves.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (January - March)

The austral summer provides the most reliable windows for quality surf at La Isla. Average swell height sits in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range, periods hold around 13-13.5s, and the southwest-facing beach is right in the firing line of consistent SSW/SW groundswell. True offshore flow from N, NNO, NO and ONO is never abundant here, but this is the only stretch of the year where it shows up with any regularity, peaking at 7% in March. This is the time to watch for groomed, long-period peaks.
