When conditions align, this wave is fast, hollow, and prone to sudden close-outs—a true test of reflexes and wave-reading ability. Best Surf Season (October - March)

Paul do Mar is a southwest-facing slab that lives by the North Atlantic's mood. The surf year reaches its peak between October and March, when the ocean's storm track is firing on all cylinders and the average swell height climbs into the 2.0-2.6m (6.5-8.5ft) range with periods of 11.5-12.9s. These are the months when strong extratropical cyclones rolling across the North Atlantic generate serious groundswell; on the rare but deadly occasions when that energy lines up in the SSW, SW, WSW or W window, the reef at Paul do Mar turns into a pumping, hollow, properly firing wave. The frustrating part is that the long-term wave rose is dominated by NNW and NW swell, which are not ideal for a southwest-facing beach. That means you have to hunt the days when the low's position pushes the fetch more westerly or when long-period energy refocuses around Madeira's western corner. Even so, this is the season where the heavy hitters come to play, and the 41-45% offshore wind frequency from the NNE/NE quadrant keeps the faces reasonably workable between frontal passages.
