Ponta do Paul seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm track switches on in October and Ponta do Paul starts to see serious surf. Average wave heights climb to between 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) and periods lengthen to 11.5-12.9s, with the 1.5-2.5m range dominating the wave roses. True W/WSW/SW swell windows are rarer than the dominant NNW/NW groundswell, but when lows track close to the Portuguese coast and the angle swings into the west-southwest quadrant, this spot really feels it. Offshore winds from the NNE/NE/ENE/E quadrants blow around 40-46% of the time, producing glassy, powerful sessions. Water temperatures drop from 23°C in October to 17.9°C by March, so a solid 4/3mm wetsuit is the go-to.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)

Spring and early autumn offer a mix of fun surf and tricky transitions. April still holds 7ft (2.1m) groundswell at 11.2s, but the wind quality becomes less reliable. May and June drop to 5ft (1.5m) with periods around 9-10s, and the swell is dominated by NNW/NNE windswell rather than true westerly groundswell. September is the best of this group: water is still warm at 23.8°C, ideal wind hits 55%, and the first autumn low-pressure pulses start pushing fresh W/NW energy into the Atlantic. A 3/2mm wetsuit is usually enough in these months.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

The summer doldrums are real at Ponta do Paul. With the Azores High parked across the North Atlantic, average swell heights sink to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods shorten to 8.5-9.1s. The wave rose is filled with short-period NNW and NNE windswell, while W/SW/WSW groundswell nearly disappears. That said, the Portuguese Nortada pumps NE winds, making for clean, groomed summer surf. August is especially good for consistency, with 54% ideal wind, but surfers looking for power will need to wait for the first storms of autumn.
