Today's Surf Conditions at Praia do Norte
Spot Overview & Description
Nazare is the apex of big-wave surfing, a beach break that catapulted into global consciousness when Garrett McNamara’s 2011 session revealed its monstrous potential. The offshore Nazare Canyon acts as a massive lens, focusing distant swells into towering, freight-train peaks that explode over a sand bottom. On smaller days, the inner sand bar can still deliver heavy, hollow tubes that demand expert reflexes for those seeking barrel time. This zone offers both lefts and rights, breaking over a mix of sand that ranges from shallow close to shore to surprisingly deep on the biggest sets. Despite the wave’s proximity to a moderate-sized coastal town, the water remains remarkably clean, allowing surfers to focus on the raw power of the ocean rather than local runoff. Whether you’re chasing a 60-foot behemoth or a punchy 8-footer, Nazare’s combination of canyon-induced size and sand-bottom variety makes it a true proving ground for the world’s best.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Praia do Norte is one of Europe's most exposed west-facing Atlantic arenas, and from October through March the North Atlantic storm machine is running at full tilt. Average swell heights sit in the 1.9m to 2.4m (6-8ft) range while average periods climb to 11-14 seconds, producing the long-period, powerful groundswells that make this stretch of Portuguese coast so famous. During deep winter, low-pressure systems and a more active jet stream aim relentless WNW and NW swell at the coast, and the ideal offshore flow from the NO/ONO/O/OSO quadrant is most frequent. This is the prime window for serious, heavy, and at times XL surf.
