Sao Pedro de Moel seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

As the North Atlantic storm track shifts southward, Sao Pedro de Moel comes alive. The beach's west-northwest exposure puts it right in the firing line for long-period W, WNW and NW swells that roll in from the deep ocean. During these months, the average swell height holds between 6 and 8ft (1.8-2.4m) with periods of 12-13 seconds, generating powerful, rippable surf. Critically, the wind patterns line up over the Iberian Peninsula: when high pressure builds over Europe, easterly and southeasterly winds blow offshore, grooming the waves into clean, hollow lines. With water temps around 14-15°C (57-59°F) and occasional rain, it's not tropical, but the quality is unmatched.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

The shoulder months are a game of patience. As the Azores High begins to strengthen in spring, swell heights drop to 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) and periods shorten to 10-11 seconds. Frequent north-northwest winds - cross-shore and often 20-30kph - create bumpy conditions, though any easterly breeze can turn a modest swell into fun, rippable waves. September is the first sign of autumn, with the ocean still warm from summer and the first long-period swells of the season starting to appear.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the doldrums at Sao Pedro de Moel. The Azores High sits firmly over the North Atlantic, and the beach becomes exposed to a persistent NNW wind that blows 30-50% of the time. Average swells shrink to 4-4.5ft (1.2-1.4m) with periods of just 8-9 seconds - weak and short-period. Offshore winds are almost absent (ideal wind only 5-9% of the time), so most days are blown out or just tiny. This is the season for a grovel, not for glory.
