Spot Overview & Description

Swell Height4 - 15 ft
SeabedUneven Reef
Skill LevelIntermediate
Best TideMid, High

La Preciosa is a gem tucked around the corner from the more famous Encuentro, offering a welcome escape from the crowds. The trade-off? Expect a longer paddle out, as a sweeping current adds a bit of work to earn those waves. This spot shines brightest with a north to northeast swell, ideally pushing through at around 4 feet (1.2 meters) to really wake up the uneven reef. When it does, La Preciosa delivers both left and right peaks, though it demands a bit more size than its neighbor to reach its full potential. Timing is key: aim for mid to high tide, when the waves stand up cleaner and more consistently. A southeast wind is your ally, grooming the faces for that silky, open-canvas feel. Best suited for intermediate surfers comfortable with a little current and a reef bottom, this spot offers a more relaxed, rewarding session when the conditions align. Winter months often bring the most reliable setup, so keep an eye on the swell window—when it hits right, you’ll find yourself on picture-perfect waves with precious few others in the lineup. Always check the tide before you head out; it’s the difference between a so-so session and one that sticks in your memory.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - April)

The North Atlantic winter storm track takes aim at the Caribbean, sending consistent pulses of northern swell directly toward Preciosa. During these months, the bulk of the swell arrives from the NNE, NE, and NNW quadrants, yielding the largest and most powerful waves of the year. Average heights hover around 1.6-1.7m, with periods in the 9-9.5s range, producing solid, punchy surf. However, the trade winds often blow from the east and southeast, creating side-shore or light onshore conditions. The magic happens when a cold front pushes through, shifting winds to the south, southwest, or west-southwest, delivering glassy offshore conditions on a clean groundswell. These windows are rare but can produce epic, long-period waves. October and November stand out as the peak months due to a better balance of swell size and favorable wind frequency.

Fair Surf Season (May & September)

May and September serve as transitional months. The winter storm track begins to weaken in May, while September sees the early signs of its return. Swell direction shifts toward the ENE and E, which are less ideal angles for Preciosa, resulting in smaller, cleaner waves on average. Heights drop to around 1.3m and periods shorten into the 8-8.5s range. The trade winds become more variable, and a higher percentage of light and offshore winds (38-50% ideal) makes for fun, rippable conditions when the swell lines up. Expect fun-sized waves with occasional pumping pulses from decaying tropical systems or early winter storms.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

June through August marks the low point of the surf calendar at Preciosa. The North Atlantic storm track retreats, leaving the Caribbean dominated by the easterly trade wind swell. Swell directions are overwhelmingly from the E and ENE (87-97% of all wave energy), which wrap in with a poor angle for the NNE-facing beach. Average wave heights dip to 1.2-1.3m and periods fall to 7.3-7.5s, resulting in small, choppy and often weak surf. Winds are mostly from the east and southeast, blowing side-shore to onshore, further degrading quality. The only saving grace is the higher frequency of light winds and occasional offshore days from the south (ideal wind 33-42% of the time), but these seldom coincide with any significant swell. Tropical waves and distant hurricanes can produce short-lived pulses, but overall, expect groveling conditions with rare openings for a fun session.
