Best Surf Season (November - February)

Sochi is not a classic ocean-basin groundswell magnet. The Black Sea is a semi-enclosed, fetch-limited sea, and the waves that hit this SW-facing shoreline are mostly local windswell. Still, the winter months from November through February are the closest thing to a real surf season. The Mediterranean storm track becomes active, and cyclones sliding across the Black Sea send pulses out of the S/SSW/SW/WSW window. Average surf heights climb to 2-3ft (0.6-0.8m) and periods creep up to 5-6s. More importantly, offshore N/NE wind windows reach 17-22% of the time, offering the best chance to find clean, peaky waves between cold fronts. The phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the broader Euro-Atlantic pattern matters here too: when the NAO is negative, cold continental air is more likely to spill south over Russia and Mediterranean storms are more likely to track into the Black Sea, setting up the classic Sochi recipe of S/SW swell plus N/NE offshore wind. This is the time to watch the pressure charts, because when a low sits over the Black Sea and a continental high pushes dry air from the N/NE, Sochi can actually produce fun, rideable surf.
