Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (December - March)
During the winter months, the North Atlantic delivers consistent medium-period swell to the Dominican Republic's north coast. Average wave heights hover around 1.5-1.6m with periods averaging 9.3-9.4s, providing punchy, rideable waves at Sosua. The dominant swell direction is from the ENE and NE, which, while not perfectly aligned with the beach's north-facing exposure, still wrap nicely into the bay. However, onshore winds from the north can be problematic, with ideal wind conditions occurring only about 29-37% of the time. When the stars align and a southerly breeze cleans up the faces, the waves can be really fun, with some sets reaching the 1.5-2.5m range.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & October - November)
These transitional months see a dip in swell size and period but an improvement in wind conditions. April and May average 1.2-1.3m with periods dropping to 8.1-8.9s, while October and November offer slightly better size at 1.2-1.5m and periods around 9.1-9.3s. The wind becomes more favorable, with ideal percentages climbing to 35-56%, as the trade winds shift more easterly and southeasterly, offering cleaner conditions. Swell energy still comes primarily from the ENE and NE, delivering workable waves for shortboards and fun-guns. Occasional pulses from the north can deliver peaky conditions.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
Summer brings the smallest and weakest surf of the year to Sosua. Average wave heights drop to 1.1-1.2m with periods as low as 7.2-8.8s, resulting in choppy, underpowered waves. The swell direction becomes almost exclusively from the E and ENE, making it difficult for the north-facing beach to capture any significant energy. On the bright side, wind conditions are at their best, with 39-58% ideal conditions as the easterly trades blow side-offshore, keeping the surface glassy. This is a great time for longboards, SUPs, and beginners looking for small, clean waves, but don't expect any pumping surf.
