Best Surf Season (May - August)
Buffels Bay finds its true rhythm as the Austral winter takes hold and the Southern Ocean storm belt shifts equatorward. From May to August, the trade-wind influence weakens relative to the pre-frontal NW/N winds that groom the SSE-facing bay. Average swell heights climb to 8-9ft (2.6-2.8m), average periods push to 12.2-12.4s, and ideal offshore wind frequency jumps to 48-60%. The dominant SSW-SW swells, although not perfectly aligned with the beach, arrive with enough period and energy to wrap around the headlands and light up the bay. Late-autumn and winter cold-front sequences create classic front-rider windows: swell builds from the southwest, winds swing to NW/NNW offshore, and the bay turns clean and lined-up. May and June are statistical standouts, while July remains deep, powerful and consistent.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
These are transitional months when both the synoptic pattern and surf quality can pivot quickly. March-April sees average swells still in the 7-8ft (2.3-2.4m) range with periods of 11.4-11.8s, while the ideal offshore wind frequency rises from 30% to 42%, meaning cleaner opportunities begin to appear in April. September-October retains solid winter groundswell of 8-9ft (2.5-2.7m), but the wind field becomes more variable as the circumpolar trough weakens and the South Atlantic/Indian Ocean highs reassert themselves. ESE trades and westerly shifts cut the ideal-wind frequency back to 28-38%. On good days, long-period Southern Ocean swells still fire, but expect a mixed bag and a need to read the forecasts carefully.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
Austral summer is the low-quality season at Buffels Bay, not because the swell disappears entirely, but because the prevailing ESE/SE trades blow directly onshore and shorter-period energy takes over. Average wave heights remain respectable at 7-8ft (2.2-2.4m), yet periods slip to 10.9-11.1s and ideal offshore wind frequency bottoms out between 20-25%. High-pressure ridging south of the continent sets up a strong coastal pressure gradient, feeding 10-30kph east-southeasterly winds for days at a time. These produce bumpy, wind-blown surfaces and often rule out the better SSW/SW groundswell lines. Still, the occasional cut-off low or weak cold front can briefly knock the trades down and deliver a clean, glassy window, so it is not a total write-off, just don't book a trip expecting consistency.
