Best Surf Season (December - February)

When the North Atlantic storm track aims its energy toward the Iberian Peninsula, Barbate comes alive. December, January, and February represent the core of the surf year, with average swells in the 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft) range and average periods of 11.0-11.7s. That is powerful long-period territory for a south-facing beach like Barbate, especially when low pressure drifts into the Gulf of Cádiz and sends waves from the S/SW window. When the NAO shifts negative and the storm track sags south, the Gulf of Cádiz becomes a low-pressure magnet and the S/SW swells align perfectly with the beach. Offshore northerly flow is also at its most reliable, with ideal winds 37-46% of the time. Frontal passages bring rain and shifting wind, but the clean windows after a low pushes through are exceptional.
