Best Surf Season (October - March)

Yerbabuena enters its prime as the North Atlantic begins to spin up bigger, more organized low-pressure systems. Average wave heights climb into the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range and periods lengthen past 10 seconds, giving the southwest-facing beach a powerful, rideable pulse. The most reliable sessions come when long-period W or WNW groundswell wraps into the bay, but the real standouts are the rarer S, SSW and SW swells that line up directly on the beach. These months also bring the highest percentage of offshore N to NNW winds, with January and December topping the annual list at 45% and 40% ideal wind respectively, so the surface stays glassy and the waves keep a clean shape. Throughout this period, the North Atlantic Oscillation is the main player: positive phases push strong westerly storm tracks over northern Spain, while negative phases can send lows further south and produce those S/SW swells that Yerbabuena looks like it was made for. Cooler water temperatures around 15-17°C accompany the more energetic conditions.
