Isla de Santa Marina

Santa Marina, a world-class right-hand reefbreak, peels along the western fringe of Isla de Santa Marina, just off the eastern edge of Playa de Somo. When conditions align, it delivers a muscular, high-performance ride: heaving open faces, long, grinding walls, and legitimate barrel sections that detonate over a rugged, mixed bottom of sand and exposed rock. This is a wave of consequence. At its best, Santa Marina offers world-class quality, but it demands respect—powerful hold-downs and jagged rocks lurking in the whitewater separate the experienced from the overmatched. Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, and Isla de Santa Marina is right in the firing line. From October through March, the average swell height sits between 1.6m and 2.1m (5-7ft), while average periods of 11-13 seconds bring serious, long-period groundswell. The wave data is unmistakable: north-west and west-north-west swell dominates around 60-70 percent of the time, which is exactly the window this west-north-west-facing beach is exposed to. These are deep-water swells generated by strong extratropical cyclones tracking across the North Atlantic and through the Bay of Biscay. When the wind aligns, Isla de Santa Marina pumps with clean, powerful, consistently surfable waves.
