Somo unfurls as a sprawling, dune-backed beachbreak, its sand-bottom contours offering a generous spread of lefts and rights across a seemingly endless parade of peaks. It merges seamlessly with Loredo to create one of the most expansive stretches of coastline in the region, with sweeping views across the bay to Santander. The wave is consistent and, when conditions align, the banks can carve into clean, well-defined shapes. However, as the swell pushes past its comfort zone, the setup tends to max out, losing that crisp, rideable form in favor of unruly, blown-out chaos. Best handled by intermediate to advanced surfers, with light offshore winds and mid-tide offering the sweetest setup.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (November - March)

When fall transitions into winter, the North Atlantic storm track starts firing straight into the southern Bay of Biscay, and Somo is the first beach to feel it. The beach's north-facing exposure means the region's dominant NW/NNW groundswells have a long fetch to build in, while average swell heights climb to 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) and periods hang in the 12-13s range. The catch is that the same raw northwesterly energy often drags a cold front and onshore NW wind with it. The real magic comes when a storm pushes or stalls to the north and a high pressure ridge sets up over France, allowing S/SW/SO winds to groom the waves offshore. With ideal winds present 43-55% of the time, winter is by far the most consistent season for clean, powerful surf.
