Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (May - September)

During the heart of the Southern Hemisphere winter, the Roaring Forties come alive, generating powerful long-period groundswells that march northward toward the Cape. Sunset Reef sees its biggest and most consistent surf from May through September, with average wave heights peaking at 2.9m in July and periods averaging 12.6s. While the dominant swell direction remains from the SW-SSW quadrant, these southwesterly swells wrap effectively into the reef, delivering wedging, powerful lines. The southeast trade winds blow strong and steady from SE/SSE, providing clean offshore conditions that groom the faces perfectly. This is the prime window when the right combination of size, period, and wind aligns for epic sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April and October)

The transitional months of April and October offer a blend of winter power and summer lulls. Swell heights average around 2.4m with periods near 12s, and the favorable southeast wind regime still holds at about 15-18% ideal conditions. The swell direction is still predominantly southwesterly, but with less consistency. You can still score solid, clean waves when a good SW swell lines up with a high-pressure system parking itself over the interior, but the quality is more hit-and-miss compared to the winter peak.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Summer brings an overall downturn in surf energy at Sunset Reef. Average swell heights drop to around 2.3m and periods shorten to 11-11.7s, with the southeast trades decreasing in strength and reliability. The wind becomes less consistently offshore – ideal conditions drop to 10-14% – and the swell direction remains stubbornly from the south-southwest. While there are still fun, clean days when a passing front or cut-off low delivers a decent W-SW swell, the combo of smaller size, shorter period, and increased chances of onshore winds makes for a generally inconsistent season. Patience is key during these months.
