During these months, Anne Avenue averages a solid 3.1m with periods often exceeding 12 seconds, delivering the kind of energy that defines the spot. More importantly, the wind regime shifts favorably, with dominant offshore flows from the W and WSW clocking in over 35% of the time. While the swell direction leans South-Southwest to Southwest, the east-southeast-facing coast still captures a healthy dose of wrap-around energy. When a strong low-pressure system spins up in the South Atlantic and aligns its fronts, the result is flawless, groomed peaks with the power to light up the line-up.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September - October)

These transitional months offer the best compromise between swell size and favorable swell direction. The westerly wind belt begins to influence the region, bringing a good mix of clean offshore days. While the average swell height dips slightly to 2.7-3.0m, the period remains impressive, often in the 11-12 second range. Importantly, the percentage of swell from the more easterly quadrants (E, ESE, SE) increases, providing more direct exposure to the optimum swell window. These months can produce outstanding surf, particularly when a subtropical coastal low stalls off the KwaZulu-Natal coast, feeding in clean east swell under a light west-northwest breeze. It is a time to watch the charts closely for those classic autumn and spring setups.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Summer in the Cape brings the brunt of the easterly trade wind influence to Anne Avenue. The wind shifts predominantly onshore from the E and ENE, blowing directly into the beach's exposure and ruining the wave quality. Even though the frequency of optimal swell from the east through southeast is at its annual peak (exceeding 10% of all swell observations), the persistent onshore flow makes the waves at the spot unruly and choppy. Average wave heights settle between 2.4m and 2.6m, and periods drop to around 11 seconds—still fun-sized, but often messy. The best chance for decent waves comes during brief spells when a passing cold front swings the wind behind it to the west, offering a clean, glassy session before the trade winds return. Patience and a flexible schedule are key during the summer season.

May: Winter's Dominance Begins

May is where the winter surf season truly takes hold. The average wave height jumps to 2.9m, period to 12.2s, and the percentage of ideal wind reaches 34%. The swell is overwhelmingly from the southwest quadrant (SW 17.9%, SSW 13.7%), but this is no bad thing: the consistent offshore wind from the west (W 24.7%, WSW 14.1%) grooms these swells into powerful, well-shaped lines at Anne Avenue. While direct east swell is rare (only 4.1% from optimal directions), the long period SW swell wraps into the spot with enough energy to produce excellent rides. When a large low-pressure system is parked in the Southern Ocean, May delivers some of the most consistent and largest surf of the year, often in the 2-3m range with a sturdy west wind keeping the surface clean.
