Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during these months, delivering consistent, powerful swell as the jet stream drives a relentless parade of extratropical cyclones across the basin. Average swell heights hover between 2.5m and 2.8m, with long-period energy (12-13s) that wraps gracefully around the Peniche peninsula to greet Baleal's north-facing breaks. The wind patterns, while still dominated by northerlies, offer a higher percentage of offshore southern quadrants (SSW to SW) during these months—especially in October, where ideal wind conditions peak at 27%. This season is prime time for Baleal, with the potential for pumping, firing waves in the 1.5-2.5m range when a low pressure stalls off the coast and a ridge builds from the south. The NAO index frequently swings negative, amplifying storm tracks and shunting the jet south, which funnels large, clean swell directly into the spot. If you want epic, heavy sessions, this is your window.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transition months bridge the gap between the powerful winter and the sluggish summer. April sees average swell heights drop to 2.1m with a period of 11.2s, while September bounces back slightly to 1.7m and 10.5s. The swell remains predominantly from the NW and NNW—good directions for Baleal—but the energy is less consistent and often mixed with smaller, choppier groundswell. The wind is ideal about 21% of the time, comparable to March, but the lighter pressure gradients mean the northerly onshore flow (N, NNW) is more variable. You'll find fun, rippable waves on the better days, especially when a lingering summer high-pressure system gives way to a weak cold front. It's a fair season—not firing, but reliable enough for good sessions if you time the weather windows.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles over the Portuguese coast, and Baleal enters its slow period. The Azores High strengthens, pushing storm tracks north and leaving the region with weak, short-period swell. Average heights drop to 1.5-1.8m, and periods fall below 10s, resulting in choppy, messy conditions for much of the time. The wind is the real culprit here: from June through August, the dominant north-northwest wind blows directly onshore over 60% of the time, with ideal wind percentages plummeting to 11-18%. July is the worst month, with an average height of just 1.5m and a period of 8.6s—groveling territory. The swell that does arrive is mostly windswell from the NNW, which lines up okay but lacks the power to overcome the onshore breeze. On rare occasions, a late-season tropical system or a cut-off low can throw in a fun day, but for the most part, this is a time to explore other spots or enjoy the beach. The waves are small, fun-sized at best, and only for the dedicated.

July: Peak Summer Slump

July is the low point of the year for Baleal. Average swell height bottoms out at 1.5m, and the wave period plummets to 8.6s—the shortest of any month. The swell rose is almost entirely dependent on the NNW direction (52.4% of total energy), which delivers mostly small, mushy windswell. The wind situation is dire: N and NNW winds combine for over 70% of all observations, blowing directly onshore at speeds often exceeding 20kph. Ideal wind from the south is a mere 11%—you'll need a lottery win to see clean lines. The waves rarely exceed 1.5m, and when they do, they are often too storm-affected. On the plus side, the rare pulse of W or WNW groundswell (from a disintegrating tropical storm) can bring a few fun, longer-period waves, but these events are fleeting. July at Baleal is best spent on a longboard, or better yet, exploring the south-facing beaches of the Algarve. It's the definition of low season.
