Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter engine roars to life, delivering a steady diet of powerful, long-period swell to Brusand during these months. Average wave heights routinely exceed 1.5m, with peak periods hovering in the 8-9 second range and occasional pulses of 10-14 second energy. The dominant swell directions shift between W, WNW, and NW – not ideal, but a significant portion (20-30%) arrives from the prime SW to WSW window, especially in December and January. The cold months also bring the highest percentage of offshore wind days (16-18%), most often from N and NNW, though easterly winds are common as high pressure builds over Scandinavia. NAO-positive winters are your friend here, steering more deep low-pressure systems toward Norway and ramping up both swell size and frequency. Expect firing, hollow waves when the wind aligns, but be ready for plenty of onshore days too.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transition months offer a mixed bag of smaller yet occasionally fun swell, with averages around 1.1-1.3m and periods of 7.5-8.0s. April sees a drop in overall wave energy, but the wind window improves slightly (20% ideal), with more frequent N and NNE breezes. September still holds echoes of summer but benefits from the first autumn gales, pushing average heights back up and bringing some S-SW swell. Both months can deliver surprise sessions when a late-season low or early cold front aligns the SW swell with an offshore northerly flow. It's a gamble, but the payoff is uncrowded peaks.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Brusand is a quiet affair. Average swell heights drop to a marginal 0.9-1.0m and periods slump to 6.2-6.5s – just enough for a grovel on a longboard or fish. The dominant swell sources are from W and NW, which refract in but rarely produce punch. Worse, the wind is often onshore from the SW or SSE/SE, thanks to thermal lows and a persistent trough over the North Sea. Ideal wind percentages fall to a dismal 14-15%. Occasional pulses of S-SSW swell (from distant storms in the South Atlantic) can sneak in, but expect small, soft waves best suited for beginners or a damp session on a foil board.

December: Peak Winter – Size and Aggression

December wraps up the year with an average height of 1.9m and period 8.7s. Swell from W (11.3%), WNW (12.3%), and NW (11.5%) dominates, but the prime SW to WSW window holds a share of 23.2% (WSW 10.0%, SW 8.0%). Many of these waves exceed 2.5m (3-4m days in the XL range). Wave periods often stretch to 10-14s and even 15-19s during the deepest lows. Ideal wind is 18% – the same as February – with offshore winds from N, NNE, and NE totalling 9.9%. The dominant onshore flow is from ESE (11.7%) and SE (9.5%), but the frequency of pure offshore events is higher than in January. December is the pinnacle of the Norwegian surfing year: big, powerful, and cold, with the potential for epic, firing sessions when conditions align.
