Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, delivering consistent, powerful swell from the northwest to west quadrants. Combined with favourable offshore winds from the east, Coxos lights up with long-period, hollow waves. Average swell heights range from 2.0m to 2.6m with periods averaging 11-13s, providing epic conditions for experienced surfers. The winter months (January-February) see the most consistent swell, though storms can bring strong westerly winds, requiring careful timing.

Fair Surf Season (April - May)

As the North Atlantic storm track begins to weaken, swell heights and periods decrease. April still offers decent swell (avg 2.0m, 11s) but wind becomes more variable with increasing north winds. May sees a drop to 1.7m and 10s periods, with more days of onshore flow. Surfable waves are still present, especially on days with easterly winds, but quality is inconsistent.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The summer months are characterised by small, weak swell and persistent northerly winds that create choppy, onshore conditions. Average heights fall to 1.4-1.6m and periods drop to 8-9s, resulting in slow, gutless waves. The wind is ideal less than 20% of the time, mostly during occasional easterly wind events. While the swell direction is often from the NW, the lack of power and poor wind make for challenging surfing. Occasional south swells can offer relief, but generally, this is a time for rest or rope climbing.

January: The Peak of Winter Power

January is the apex of the North Atlantic storm season, delivering the largest and most powerful swell to Coxos. Average swell height hits 2.6m with a period of 13.0s, meaning waves are often in the pumping, heavy to massive range. The dominant swell directions are NW (21.9%), WNW (17.7%), and NNW (9.5%) — all within the optimal W-WNW band that wraps well into Coxos. Onshore wind from the W and NW is a threat, but the data shows ideal wind conditions 27% of the time, mostly from the N and NNE quadrants (N 13%, NNE 10.8%), which are offshore for this WSW-facing point. When the stars align, expect long-period, double-overhead sets peeling down the reef. Watch for storm swells that can push well over 2.5m, making it a day for the brave.
