Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, delivering consistent, powerful swell from the northwest to west quadrants. Combined with favourable offshore winds from the east, Coxos lights up with long-period, hollow waves. Average swell heights range from 2.0m to 2.6m with periods averaging 11-13s, providing epic conditions for experienced surfers. The winter months (January-February) see the most consistent swell, though storms can bring strong westerly winds, requiring careful timing.

Fair Surf Season (April - May)

As the North Atlantic storm track begins to weaken, swell heights and periods decrease. April still offers decent swell (avg 2.0m, 11s) but wind becomes more variable with increasing north winds. May sees a drop to 1.7m and 10s periods, with more days of onshore flow. Surfable waves are still present, especially on days with easterly winds, but quality is inconsistent.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The summer months are characterised by small, weak swell and persistent northerly winds that create choppy, onshore conditions. Average heights fall to 1.4-1.6m and periods drop to 8-9s, resulting in slow, gutless waves. The wind is ideal less than 20% of the time, mostly during occasional easterly wind events. While the swell direction is often from the NW, the lack of power and poor wind make for challenging surfing. Occasional south swells can offer relief, but generally, this is a time for rest or rope climbing.

July: Peak Summer Doldrums

July is the nadir of the Coxos surf calendar. Average swell height bottoms out at 1.4m with a period of just 8.5s — choppy, low, messy. Swell direction is overwhelmingly NNW (54.2%) and NW (33.0%), meaning the small amount of swell that arrives is both weak and poorly aligned. Ideal wind is a paltry 7%, with N winds dominating at 42.4% and often gusting >30kph (19.7% in 30-40kph). These conditions produce nothing but windslop and whitecaps. The rare easterly or south wind could make a tiny wave rideable, but July is essentially a surf vacation. Focus on other sports or explore the south coast of Portugal for better summer options. Coxos rests until autumn.
