Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, delivering consistent, powerful swell from the northwest to west quadrants. Combined with favourable offshore winds from the east, Coxos lights up with long-period, hollow waves. Average swell heights range from 2.0m to 2.6m with periods averaging 11-13s, providing epic conditions for experienced surfers. The winter months (January-February) see the most consistent swell, though storms can bring strong westerly winds, requiring careful timing.

Fair Surf Season (April - May)

As the North Atlantic storm track begins to weaken, swell heights and periods decrease. April still offers decent swell (avg 2.0m, 11s) but wind becomes more variable with increasing north winds. May sees a drop to 1.7m and 10s periods, with more days of onshore flow. Surfable waves are still present, especially on days with easterly winds, but quality is inconsistent.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The summer months are characterised by small, weak swell and persistent northerly winds that create choppy, onshore conditions. Average heights fall to 1.4-1.6m and periods drop to 8-9s, resulting in slow, gutless waves. The wind is ideal less than 20% of the time, mostly during occasional easterly wind events. While the swell direction is often from the NW, the lack of power and poor wind make for challenging surfing. Occasional south swells can offer relief, but generally, this is a time for rest or rope climbing.

October: The North Atlantic Awakens

October sees a sharp increase in activity as the North Atlantic storm track re-ignites. Average swell height jumps to 2.0m, period to 11.4s — a pumping start to the best season. Swell direction is dominated by NW (30.6%) and WNW (18.6%), with a good portion of W (6.7%) and WSW (2.0%). Ideal wind climbs to 25%, and notably the N wind drops to 21.4% while NNE (10.5%) and NE (3.9%) provide many clean offshore days. The longer period (11-12s) means waves have shape and power, often in the fun to heavy range. October is the month when Coxos truly comes alive. Look for high-pressure ridges extending over Iberia, producing light easterly flow in the mornings and giant groundswell from distant storms. This is when the great waves really come to life.
