Best Surf Season (April - October)

The southern hemisphere winter drives a steady stream of long-period swell into the Indian Ocean, and Ekas feels the pulse. From April through October, the trade winds shift to the southeast, delivering consistent offshore flow from the S, SSW, SW, and WSW. This combination of clean offshore winds and solid swell energy averaging 1.4-1.8m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds creates the most reliable surf window. Expect fun, rippable waves to pumping sets as the deep-ocean groundswells wrap into the bay.

Fair Surf Season (November & March)

These transitional months see a shift in the atmospheric regime. November still enjoys a high percentage of offshore winds (79% ideal) but swell heights begin to ease. March marks the end of the wet season with increasing offshore flow (42% ideal) as the monsoon transitions. While conditions are less consistent than the peak months, there are still plenty of clean, long-period waves to be had, especially when the wind aligns from the south.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The northwest monsoon dominates the austral summer, bringing frequent onshore winds from the W and WNW that deteriorate wave quality. Swell heights remain modest (1.3-1.4m) and periods are still long, but the wind direction is often unfavorable. The percentage of ideal surfing conditions drops to 15-33%. Occasional windows of offshore flow can still produce good waves, but you'll need patience and a keen eye on the forecast to score.

January: The Monsoon's Grip

January sits firmly in the northwest monsoon, with onshore winds from the W and WNW dominating over 48% of the time. Only 15% of the time do offshore directions (S, SSW, SW, WSW) prevail, and even then speeds are light. Swell energy comes almost exclusively from the SSW (40.4%) and SW (55.7%), with an average height of 1.4m and a long period of 12.6s. Despite the unfavorable wind bias, the infrequent offshore windows can align with the long-period groundswell, producing punchy, rideable waves in the 1-1.5m range. However, most days you'll be battling choppy, messy conditions courtesy of the onshore flow. Patience is key.
