Best Surf Season (April - October)

The southern hemisphere winter drives a steady stream of long-period swell into the Indian Ocean, and Ekas feels the pulse. From April through October, the trade winds shift to the southeast, delivering consistent offshore flow from the S, SSW, SW, and WSW. This combination of clean offshore winds and solid swell energy averaging 1.4-1.8m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds creates the most reliable surf window. Expect fun, rippable waves to pumping sets as the deep-ocean groundswells wrap into the bay.

Fair Surf Season (November & March)

These transitional months see a shift in the atmospheric regime. November still enjoys a high percentage of offshore winds (79% ideal) but swell heights begin to ease. March marks the end of the wet season with increasing offshore flow (42% ideal) as the monsoon transitions. While conditions are less consistent than the peak months, there are still plenty of clean, long-period waves to be had, especially when the wind aligns from the south.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The northwest monsoon dominates the austral summer, bringing frequent onshore winds from the W and WNW that deteriorate wave quality. Swell heights remain modest (1.3-1.4m) and periods are still long, but the wind direction is often unfavorable. The percentage of ideal surfing conditions drops to 15-33%. Occasional windows of offshore flow can still produce good waves, but you'll need patience and a keen eye on the forecast to score.

July: Consistent Powerhouse

July continues the winter swell train with average height steady at 1.8m and period at 14.3s. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from SSW (60.1%) and S (29.8%), with the largest percentage in the 1.5-2.5m range (over 50% of waves). Offshore wind frequency is 51%, with ESE (55.0%) and SE (35.7%) providing clean conditions on many days. The surf is consistently firing, with very powerful sets. However, the wind can sometimes clock around to onshore directions, so timing is essential. Expect heavy, pumping waves with long period that will challenge even the most seasoned surfers.
