Best Surf Season (April - May)

As the subtropical high-pressure belt settles into its autumn rhythm, Golf Course Reef comes alive. April and May deliver the most balanced conditions of the year. The percentage of ideal offshore wind from the west peaks near 50-57%, while the Pacific still pumps reliable east-northeast swell. With average wave periods climbing into the 9-second range, you get punchy, ripable waves that hold shape under glassy westerly winds. This is the sweet spot for consistent, quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (March & September - October)

March and the spring months of September and October offer a solid backup window. Swell direction is more favorable for this east-facing reef during March, with a higher proportion of NE to ESE waves, but onshore winds are more frequent (ideal wind around 31-35%). September and October see a reversal: offshore wind reliability improves to 35-45%, but the swell shifts southward as winter storms dominate. You'll need to pick your days when a passing low-pressure system aligns a clean east pulse with a westerly change.

Low Surf Season (November - February & June - August)

Summer (November through February) is plagued by persistent onshore trade winds from the NE to ESE, with ideal offshore wind occurring only 22-26% of the time. Although the swell is abundant and often sizeable from the east quadrant, the constant onshore flow shreds the waves into choppy, sectiony messes. Winter (June to August), on the other hand, delivers exceptional offshore wind reliability (50-57%) but the dominant swell shifts far south (SSE-S), which wraps into the coast poorly and rarely lines up well at this east-facing spot. You'll score the occasional long-period south swell with clean conditions, but it's inconsistent and often too heavy or too small.

December: Early Summer Consistency, Wind Frustration

December rounds out the year like it started: abundant east swell with poor wind. Average wave height is 1.7m, period 8.0 seconds. Optimal swell directions account for 47.2% of total swell, led by NE (15.8%) and ENE (11.8%). But ideal offshore wind is a mere 23%. The prevailing winds are NE (12.7%) and NNE (11.2%), constant onshore and erosive. The surf is frequent and often waist to head-high, but usually blown-out and crumbly. Look for the rare southerly busters that swing the wind to the SW for a few hours, or small windows of early morning calm before the wind kicks in. It's a month for the diehard surfer who knows how to chase the fleeting clean-up sets. Summer is here, and all you can do is wait for a lucky break in the pattern.
