Best Surf Season (May - August)

During the austral winter, Guarda do Embau comes alive with its most consistent and quality surf. The dominant South Atlantic high-pressure system strengthens, pushing a procession of cold fronts northward. These fronts generate long-period S to SE swell that wraps into the east-facing beach, producing punchy, rideable waves in the 1-1.5m range. Critically, the frequency of offshore winds from WSW, W, and WNW peaks during these months, with ideal wind occurring 34-39% of the time. This is the sweet spot – clean, lined-up waves with occasional pumping sets when the period exceeds 10s. Expect fun-sized to solid conditions, especially in June and July when the trade wind inversion relaxes, allowing lighter morning breezes.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The transitional months of April and September offer a mixed bag. In April, the last of the summer heat still brings unstable conditions, but the swell window opens wider as the first winter lows develop. Offshore wind frequency climbs to 26%, and average wave periods push above 9s. September sees the winter pattern winding down: stronger swells (avg 1.5m) from the ESE and SE arrive, but the wind becomes more fickle with stronger N to NNE flows limiting clean windows to about 20% of the time. If you time it right, these months can deliver glassy mornings with chest-high waves.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From spring through late summer, Guarda do Embau struggles with inconsistent, onshore-dominant conditions. The South Atlantic Convergence Zone and frequent trade winds from the N and NE keep the region under a persistent onshore flow (bad winds from ONO, O, OSO, SO dominate). Swell is predominantly short-period (sub-9s) and from the E to ESE – hitting the beach head-on. However, the average height remains a rideable 1.2-1.3m, so small, groveling waves are often present. Occasional cold front passages in October and November can bring a burst of southerly swell and a brief window of offshore W winds, but these windows are scarce (14-16% ideal wind). For the patient surfer, micro-sessions on a log can still be had amid the summer chop.

June: Peak Winter – Consistent, Powerful Swells

June often delivers the best surf of the year. Offshore wind frequency peaks at 39%, with the SSW to NW quadrant accounting for over 35% of wind observations (17.6% SSW, 10.7% SW, 3.1% WSW, 1.7% W, 1.6% WNW, 2.5% NW). Swell from the S and SSE combines for 33.9% of the total, with significant heights in the 1.5-2m+ range. The average period stays high at 9.6s, but longer intervals (10-14s) are common, delivering powerful, long-period groundswell. ENE and E swells still provide background energy, but the premier waves come from the south. Expect pumping, firing conditions with clean lines. This is the month to plan a trip – just watch for occasional strong northerly winds that can blow out the surface.
