Best Surf Season (October - March)

As the North Pacific transitions into its stormy winter pattern, La Bocana comes alive with consistent, quality surf. The months from October through March bring a higher frequency of offshore wind conditions, with northerly breezes (N, NNE, NW, NNW) grooming the waves. Swell direction during this period is more varied, but the most favorable pulses come from the south and southwest (S, SSW, SW), often delivered by powerful extratropical cyclones tracking across the Pacific. These long-period groundswells (averaging 11-13 seconds) wrap nicely into the south-facing beach, offering clean, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range. The combination of reliable offshore winds and solid S/SSW swell makes this the prime window for scoring the best conditions at La Bocana.

Fair Surf Season (April - June)

Spring brings a shift in the atmospheric regime. The North Pacific storm track weakens, but the South Pacific and local tropical influences start to send more consistent, long-period S/SSW swell towards Baja. Average wave heights climb to 1.5-1.6m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds. The trade-off is a noticeable increase in afternoon onshore winds from the west and southwest (WSW, SW), which can degrade wave faces. However, morning sessions frequently enjoy light variable winds, often from the east or northeast (E, NE) that stay clean before the sea breeze kicks in. This is a solid 'shoulder season' – expect fun, sometimes pumping waves with a narrower window of truly glassy conditions.

Low Surf Season (July - September)

Summer in Baja is characterized by warm tropical waters and the potential for hurricane-induced swell, but surf conditions at La Bocana become less consistent and more challenging. While the average swell height remains solid (1.6-1.7m) and periods are long (13-14s), the dominant swell direction shifts to S and SSW, which is favorable. The main issue is the wind regime. The percentage of ideal, offshore wind drops to its lowest levels of the year (43-50%). Thermal gradients drive persistent afternoon onshore winds from the west and southwest (SW, WSW, W), often creating bumpy, choppy waves even when significant swell arrives. Dawn patrol checkers will find the cleanest conditions, but overall, this period demands patience and a willingness to surf with less-than-perfect texture.

February: Building Swell, Consistent Offshore Flow

February sees a slight increase in swell period to 11.9 seconds, while average height remains at 1.4m. The dominant direction is strongly SSW (32.4%), followed by S (14.3%) and SW (11.5%) – a very good sign for wave quality. Meanwhile, NE and ENE swells still account for 22.5%, adding mix. Wind conditions are ideal 48% of the time, with significant contributions from NE (15.6%), NNE (10.5%), and lighter NW and NNW components. These winds keep the wave faces clean, especially since they trend lighter in the mornings. The longer-period SSW groundswell is the highlight, providing punchy, powerful lines that break nicely on the sandbars. On good days, this is pumping surf.
