The wind ratios fall to 32-34% ideal, so you have to pick your windows. Typically, a passing cold front will swing the wind N-NW for a day or two, creating a clean, punchy wave on the building SW swell. It's a game of patience, but when the timing aligns, the reward is a rippable, uncrowded lineup.

Low Surf Season (April - September)

From late spring through early autumn, the Mediterranean settles into a more docile state. The dominant weather pattern shifts to a persistent thermal low that draws in onshore S and SSE winds, spoiling the surface texture. Swell heights drop dramatically—down to 0.4-0.5m from June through August—and periods shorten to 4.4-4.9s, producing weak, choppy waves. While a stray SW groundswell can still sneak in, the odds of scoring clean waves are slim. The ideal wind percentage plummets to 11-25%, making this a season better suited for a beach day than a serious surf session.

August: Small Windows of Hope

August remains deep in the summer slump, with an average swell height of 0.4m and period 4.4s. The dominant SW direction (36.9%) is still mostly undersized (25.0% under 0.5m). The wind picture improves slightly from July: ideal conditions rise to 14% due to a small uptick in N winds (12.5%) and NNW (19.0%). However, onshore SSE (23.2%) and SE (13.3%) remain the main winds. The improvement is marginal. On rare mornings, a light N wind can clean up the tiny SW windswell, producing micro waves suitable for foam boards or longboards. The water is warm and the sun is strong, so if you're patient, you might score a fun, uncrowded hour of ankle-biters. But don't expect anything over knee-high. The best strategy is to watch for a sudden shift in the synoptic pattern: a low pressure dipping into the Gulf of Genoa can briefly bring stronger NW winds and a pulse of SW swell, but such events are fleeting.
