Best Surf Season (December - January - November)

The heart of the North Atlantic winter drives the most consistent and powerful swell trains into the Ligurian Sea, and Multedo reaps the rewards. With average swell heights hovering around 0.9m and periods often pushing into the 5.5-5.6s range, you get a steady diet of fun-sized to solid waves. The real gem? Offshore winds from the north quadrant blow a remarkable 49-52% of the time, meaning clean, groomed faces are the norm. When a strong low pressure system stalls in the Gulf of Genoa, expect SW swell to wrap in beautifully under crystal-clear skies.

Fair Surf Season (October - February - March)

As the seasons transition, the consistency drops off but the potential for quality sessions remains. October and March see average heights around 0.7-0.8m with periods averaging 5.0-5.4s. The wind ratios fall to 32-34% ideal, so you have to pick your windows. Typically, a passing cold front will swing the wind N-NW for a day or two, creating a clean, punchy wave on the building SW swell. It's a game of patience, but when the timing aligns, the reward is a rippable, uncrowded lineup.

Low Surf Season (April - September)

From late spring through early autumn, the Mediterranean settles into a more docile state. The dominant weather pattern shifts to a persistent thermal low that draws in onshore S and SSE winds, spoiling the surface texture. Swell heights drop dramatically—down to 0.4-0.5m from June through August—and periods shorten to 4.4-4.9s, producing weak, choppy waves. While a stray SW groundswell can still sneak in, the odds of scoring clean waves are slim. The ideal wind percentage plummets to 11-25%, making this a season better suited for a beach day than a serious surf session.

June: Flat and Uninviting

The summer doldrums hit hard in June. Average swell height bottoms out at 0.5m with a period of 4.7s. The swell direction is still dominated by SW (38.0%) and SSW (20.8%), but over 60% of all swell is under 0.5m—micro at best. The wind is the real killer: ideal conditions occur only 12% of the time. The onshore SSE wind (29.3%) and SE wind (18.7%) are relentless, with SSE frequently blowing at 10-20kph (11.7%) and even 20-30kph (1.2%). This combination of tiny waves and strong onshore flow yields nothing but choppy, low, messy conditions. The offshore N and NNW winds are reduced to 7.4% and 14.3%, and are mostly light. Occasionally, a distant storm in the North Atlantic can send a long-period swell through the Strait of Gibraltar, but it's heavily refracted and attenuated by the time it reaches the Ligurian coast. Unless you're desperate for a paddle, June is a time to rest the surf muscles and enjoy other pursuits.
