Best Surf Season (April - September)

The autumn and winter months transform Newport into a consistent, high-quality surf destination. As the Southern Ocean roars to life, a steady stream of SE to S groundswells march up the coast, delivering average wave heights of 1.3-1.4m with periods frequently pushing 9.5 seconds. More importantly, the synoptic pattern shifts to favour strong westerly winds (WSW, W, WNW, NW) that blow directly offshore at this east-southeast facing beach. With ideal wind occurring over 33-43% of the time, the lines are clean, the faces smooth, and the waves punchy and rippable. This is the windows when Newport truly shines.

Fair Surf Season (March & October)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag of conditions. In March, the tail end of summer east swell still provides rideable waves, but the wind is still onshore too often (ideal only 22%). October sees the first stirrings of winter swell, but the trade wind influence hasn't fully retreated, keeping the quality inconsistent. Still, on the right day when a westerly wind change coincides with a long-period groundswell, Newport can deliver memorable sessions.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The height of the Australian summer is the toughest period for surfers at Newport. The dominant NE trade winds blow directly onshore (ENE, E, ESE, SE) nearly 40-50% of the time, creating bumpy, choppy conditions and short-period windswell. The average wave period drops to 8.1-8.6 seconds, and the surf is often small (1.3m on average) and messy. Only a rare tropical cyclone swell or a strong southerly buster can briefly align the elements, but overall, it's a time to sit out or seek shelter elsewhere.

December: Summer Doldrums Set In

December is the start of the most challenging period for surfers at Newport. The average swell height is 1.3m with a period of 8.1s. Swell directions are ENE (19.1%), SE (17.8%), E (17.5%), and SSE (19.5%), all within the window, but the wind is predominantly onshore from the NE (14.5%) and NNE (10.8%). Ideal offshore wind occurs only 16% of the time. The surf is characteristically choppy, low-period windswell, with most days offering nothing more than small, bumpy waves. The Christmas holiday period brings extra crowd pressure. The only saving grace is a potential tropical cyclone swell from the Coral Sea, which can produce rare, clean waves. But without that, December is a month to park the shortboard and explore other hobbies.
