Best Surf Season (April - September)

The autumn and winter months transform Newport into a consistent, high-quality surf destination. As the Southern Ocean roars to life, a steady stream of SE to S groundswells march up the coast, delivering average wave heights of 1.3-1.4m with periods frequently pushing 9.5 seconds. More importantly, the synoptic pattern shifts to favour strong westerly winds (WSW, W, WNW, NW) that blow directly offshore at this east-southeast facing beach. With ideal wind occurring over 33-43% of the time, the lines are clean, the faces smooth, and the waves punchy and rippable. This is the windows when Newport truly shines.

Fair Surf Season (March & October)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag of conditions. In March, the tail end of summer east swell still provides rideable waves, but the wind is still onshore too often (ideal only 22%). October sees the first stirrings of winter swell, but the trade wind influence hasn't fully retreated, keeping the quality inconsistent. Still, on the right day when a westerly wind change coincides with a long-period groundswell, Newport can deliver memorable sessions.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The height of the Australian summer is the toughest period for surfers at Newport. The dominant NE trade winds blow directly onshore (ENE, E, ESE, SE) nearly 40-50% of the time, creating bumpy, choppy conditions and short-period windswell. The average wave period drops to 8.1-8.6 seconds, and the surf is often small (1.3m on average) and messy. Only a rare tropical cyclone swell or a strong southerly buster can briefly align the elements, but overall, it's a time to sit out or seek shelter elsewhere.

November: Building Summer Onshores

November marks the onset of the summer surf slump. The average swell height is 1.3m with a short period of 8.1s. Swell directions are dominated by ENE (18.1%), SE (16.8%), E (16.2%), and SSE (20.2%), but the wind becomes the dominant factor. NE and NNE winds blow over 24% of the time, and ideal winds plummet to 19%. The waves are often messy windswell, with only occasional pulses of cleaner groundswell from rare storms. Average wave period is too short for powerful surfing. Expect small, choppy conditions for most of the month. November is best suited for those willing to work for marginal waves or who can wait for a southerly change.
