High-pressure systems settle over the Tasman Sea, driving persistent NE to ENE trade winds that blow directly onshore at North Narrabeen. While swell energy remains abundant—the beach is exposed to a broad E-SE fetch—the wind frequently chops up the surface, with ideal offshore conditions dropping below 30% (as low as 17% in January). Average wave periods also dip into the 8.3-8.8s range, favoring punchy but often crumbly surf. The saving grace: occasional tropical lows or east coast lows can swing winds around to the W, delivering brief, epic windows amidst the summer heat.

May: Winter's Prime Begins

May is where North Narrabeen hits its stride. Average swell height holds at 1.7m but period stretches to 9.7s, indicating deep low-pressure systems in the Southern Ocean. Swell direction is heavily weighted toward SSE (20.9%), S (14.7%), and SE (14.3%)—all optimal for the beach. The wind statistics show a dramatic improvement: offshore W-NW winds blow 41% of the time (ideal surf 41%), while onshore NE-E winds drop to under 10%. This translates to day after day of groomed lines. Waves in the 1.5-2.5m range are common, and with clean offshore flow, the barrelling sections on the sandbanks come alive.
