Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Australian winter at North Narrabeen is a symphony of cold fronts marching across the Great Australian Bight, generating powerful S, SSE, and SE swells that wrap beautifully into the beach. With average swell heights hovering around 1.7m and periods stretching into the 9.5-9.7s range, the waves pack a punch. The real magic, however, lies in the wind: between May and August, offshore flow from the W, WNW, and NW dominates over 40% of the time, grooming lines for clean, hollow waves. This is the sweet spot, where the surfline lights up with consistency and quality.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These shoulder months offer a tantalizing mix. April sees the tail end of summer's E-ENE swells giving way to more S-SSE energy, while ideal wind percentages climb to 33%. September, on the other hand, marks the beginning of the return to summer patterns: S and SSE swells still generate solid 1.5-2.5m waves, but onshore NE winds begin to creep back, reducing ideal conditions to 37%. However, between the fronts, clean windows of offshore NW flow can produce some of the most rewarding sessions.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From spring through summer, the dominant synoptic pattern shifts. High-pressure systems settle over the Tasman Sea, driving persistent NE to ENE trade winds that blow directly onshore at North Narrabeen. While swell energy remains abundant—the beach is exposed to a broad E-SE fetch—the wind frequently chops up the surface, with ideal offshore conditions dropping below 30% (as low as 17% in January). Average wave periods also dip into the 8.3-8.8s range, favoring punchy but often crumbly surf. The saving grace: occasional tropical lows or east coast lows can swing winds around to the W, delivering brief, epic windows amidst the summer heat.

November: Pre-Summer Slump

November is a challenging month for consistent surf at North Narrabeen. Ideal wind plummets to 23%, the lowest since February. Offshore quadrants account for only 15.1%. Swell period averages 8.3s—short and often windswell-driven. Swell directions are a mix: SSE (18.3%), SE (14.3%), E (12.7%), and ENE (14.9%) all compete. The wind is dominated by NE (13.8%), NNE (11.1%), and ENE (9.2%) onshore flow, ripping the surface apart. The average height is still 1.6m, but the quality is low due to short periods and cross/onshore winds. The best chance for a clean session comes from a southerly change that swings the wind offshore from the SW or W for a brief time, bringing clean but short-period S swell. It's typically a month to be patient.
