Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with the Icelandic Low deepening and firing a relentless stream of extratropical storms across the Norwegian Sea. Average swell heights climb above 1.3m, peaking at 1.6m in January, and periods often reach into the 8-9 second range, providing punchy, rideable waves. Crucially, the percentage of offshore wind days (from NE, ENE, E, ESE) hits its annual high, hovering between 14-15% – though still a minority, these windows offer clean, lined-up surf when the synoptic setups align. This is prime time for Orre, capturing the best combination of size, period, and favourable breezes.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transitional months mark a noticeable drop in both swell energy and wind consistency. April sees average heights fall to 0.9m and period to 7.5s, while September manages 1.0m at 7.1s. The North Atlantic storm track is shifting northward or just awakening, leading to more frequent periods of small, weak swell. Offshore wind percentages slip into the 9-12% range, and onshore flows become more dominant. You can still score fun sessions when a late-season or early-autumn low pushes through, but expect more groveling conditions and choppy surfaces overall.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months bring a profound lull to Orre. Average swell heights bottom out around 0.7-0.8m, with periods dropping to a marginal 6.0-6.8s, often producing weak, choppy waves that struggle to break cleanly. The North Atlantic high-pressure system dominates, suppressing storm activity and driving persistent northwesterly trade winds that blow onshore at this west-southwest facing beach. Offshore wind rates plummet to a mere 5-7%, making clean, lined-up surf a rare commodity. Unless you're a log enthusiast or beginner content with micro-swell, this is the time to explore other activities or wait for the autumn storms to return.

June: Summer Doldrums

June continues the summer lull with an average swell height of just 0.8m and the lowest average period of the year at 6.2s. The swell direction is heavily skewed toward NW (30.5%) and WNW (16.6%), with the optimal sector (SW-WSW) making up only 17.2% of swell. Nearly all waves are below 1m, often fat and weak. Wind conditions are challenging: only 5% of the time is the wind ideal, making this the worst month for offshore breezes. Offshore wind from the NE-ESE quadrant totals just 6.6%, while onshore NNW and NW winds combine for a massive 42.4% of observations. Expect almost constant onshore flow, choppy seas, and very poor surf quality. If you catch a rare offshore morning, you might score a few small but clean ankle-biters.
