Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of the dry season brings a reliable regime of light offshore easterly winds and consistent, long-period SSW groundswells. With average periods hovering around 12-13 seconds and wind favorable 23-48% of the time, this window offers the most frequent opportunities for clean, fun-sized waves. The Pacific storm track in the Southern Hemisphere is active, sending pulses of energy that wrap into the bay, often delivering waist-to-chest high surf that holds its shape beautifully under glassy skies.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, November)

The transition months see a gradual weakening of the trade winds as the Intertropical Convergence Zone migrates north. Onshore breezes become more prevalent, but sporadic strong offshore days still occur, especially early in the season. The Southern Ocean swell machine remains churning, producing punchy 6-9s energy mixed with occasional longer period swells. Surf size can bump up to head-high, but wind consistency is the limiting factor. April still offers 32% favorable wind, making it the best of the mid-season months.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

The rainy season dominates, and the wind patterns flip, with persistent onshore westerlies and southwesterlies blowing 70-90% of the time. Ideal wind drops to an abysmal 4-12%. Swell heights increase slightly to around 1m, with more 1-1.5m sets, but the quality is heavily compromised by bumpy, choppy surface conditions. Long-period energy is still present (12-13s average), but it's largely wasted as blown-out, lumpy waves. Early mornings before the seabreeze ramps up can offer fleeting windows of clean surf, but overall this is the time to explore other breaks or stay home.

September: Final Stretch of the Lull

September hits the lowest favorable wind percentage of the year at just 5%. The wind pattern is strongly dominated by onshore westerlies, with W, WNW, and WSW accounting for over 74% of observations. Swell is still predominantly from SSW (61%) but with an increased SW component (38.5%) and even a touch from WSW (0.2%). Heights remain at 1.0m average, with 25.7% of swell in the 1-1.5m range and a few bigger waves. Periods are still decent at 12.8s. The ratio of bad to good days is at its worst; only the most persistent will score.
