Best Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of winter delivers the most consistent conditions at Petacalco. With the North Pacific storm track firing, long-period SSW to SW swells roll in with average heights around 0.9-1.0m and periods pushing 13s+. Crucially, the wind is offshore (from the W to NNW) over 59% of the time in December and January, dropping to 53% in February. This combo means clean, groomed waves – often in the fun to solid range (0.5-1.5m) – with the occasional pumping set when a stronger storm aligns. The offshore flow strips the faces, creating rippable walls and long, peeling lines. It’s the prime window for quality surf at this southeast-facing beach.

Fair Surf Season (October - November & March - April)

Shoulder months bring a mix of potential and compromise. October and November see a ramp-up in swell energy (average 1.1-1.3m, periods 13.2s) as extratropical storms intensify, but the offshore wind frequency decreases to 50-59%. March and April maintain decent swell heights (1.1-1.3m) and periods (13.5-14.0s), yet the wind consistency drops to 50-52%. During these months, you’ll find plenty of rideable days, especially when winds clock around from the north. However, the window for pristine conditions narrows – you need to pick your days carefully. The swell is often powerful and long-period, but onshore flows (from S-SW) can quickly spoil the party.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer and early fall are the most challenging for surfers at Petacalco. While average swell heights actually peak in September at 1.5m, the wind quality plummets – ideal offshore winds occur only 41-47% of the time. The dominant winds shift to S, SW, and WSW, which are onshore for this southeast-facing spot. These winds chop up the wave faces, making conditions messy and blown-out. The swell itself, mostly from S and SSW, still arrives with decent period (12.9-14.1s), but without the right wind, it’s often unsurfable. Occasional pumping days can occur when a tropical system aligns with a northerly wind pulse, but they are rare. This is the season for a strike mission – be ready to go when conditions align.

June: Summer Doldrums Set In

June marks the onset of the least favorable period for surf at Petacalco. Average swell height remains at 1.4m, period 13.7s – still long period. Swell comes primarily from SSW (75.8%) with increased contributions from S (16.9%) and even some SSE (1.1%). Wave heights are decent: 53.9% in 1-1.5m from SSW, 17.7% in 1.5-2m. But the wind is now offshore only 41% of the time – the lowest of the year. Onshore SW (20.3%) and SSW (17.0%) dominate, along with increasing S (8.7%) and SSE (6.0%) with speeds up to 20kph. These winds kill the wave quality, making conditions choppy and messy. The rare day with a strong N wind can bring clean waves, but they are few and far between.
