Best Surf Season (October – March)

The heart of the winter season delivers the most consistent combination of quality swell and favourable offshore winds. As the North Pacific storm track intensifies, long-period groundswells from the SSW and SW window pour into the south-facing beach, averaging 1.0–1.3m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds. The dominant high-pressure systems over the continental US and northern Mexico drive a steady stream of light to moderate offshore airflow from the N, NNE, NE, and NNW, grooming the waves to perfection. This is when Playa Boca Chica truly shines – smooth, peeling rights and lefts, with plenty of punch and clean faces for carving.

Fair Surf Season (July – September)

During the heart of summer, the swell source shifts. The northern hemisphere storm track weakens, but distant Southern Ocean storms and early-season tropical activity in the Eastern Pacific send pulses of SSW and SW swell at 1.4–1.6m with excellent 13–14 second periods. The catch? The wind regime becomes more fickle. Light onshore breezes from the SW and WSW creep in about half the time, introducing a crumbly texture to the surface. Still, when a high-pressure ridge builds in from the north and delivers those crucial offshore flows, the waves turn clean and powerful. It’s a window of opportunity for the patient surfer.

Low Surf Season (April – June)

Autumn and early winter – April through June – represent the slump in both swell size and wind consistency. The average swell height still reaches 1.4–1.6m due to lingering Southern Ocean swells, but the wind becomes the limiting factor. Offshore wind frequencies drop to just 41–46%, meaning most days feature onshore or cross-shore flow from the S through WSW quadrants. The waves, while not small, are often chopped up and lack the clean, lined-up quality that makes this beach break. It’s the trade-off season: you may score a fun session if a cold front pushes through, but expect plenty of marginal conditions.

April: The Swell Peak Meets Fickle Winds

April produces the largest average swell height of the season at 1.4m, with a mean period of 14.1 seconds – the year’s longest. The swell window narrows drastically: a whopping 69.9% of the energy arrives from the SSW, and 27.8% from SW. This means waves are both big and long‑period. The 1–1.5m range accounts for 37.5% and the 1.5–2m class jumps to 30.5%. But there’s a catch: offshore wind reliability falls to 46%. Onshore winds from SW and WSW surge to 34.6% of observations. The result is a mixed bag – quality swell is abundant, but you’ll often face a bumpy surface. Keep an eye on the synoptic charts; a passing low can temporarily flip the wind offshore and produce epic sessions.
