Best Surf Season (October – March)

The heart of the winter season delivers the most consistent combination of quality swell and favourable offshore winds. As the North Pacific storm track intensifies, long-period groundswells from the SSW and SW window pour into the south-facing beach, averaging 1.0–1.3m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds. The dominant high-pressure systems over the continental US and northern Mexico drive a steady stream of light to moderate offshore airflow from the N, NNE, NE, and NNW, grooming the waves to perfection. This is when Playa Boca Chica truly shines – smooth, peeling rights and lefts, with plenty of punch and clean faces for carving.

Fair Surf Season (July – September)

During the heart of summer, the swell source shifts. The northern hemisphere storm track weakens, but distant Southern Ocean storms and early-season tropical activity in the Eastern Pacific send pulses of SSW and SW swell at 1.4–1.6m with excellent 13–14 second periods. The catch? The wind regime becomes more fickle. Light onshore breezes from the SW and WSW creep in about half the time, introducing a crumbly texture to the surface. Still, when a high-pressure ridge builds in from the north and delivers those crucial offshore flows, the waves turn clean and powerful. It’s a window of opportunity for the patient surfer.

Low Surf Season (April – June)

Autumn and early winter – April through June – represent the slump in both swell size and wind consistency. The average swell height still reaches 1.4–1.6m due to lingering Southern Ocean swells, but the wind becomes the limiting factor. Offshore wind frequencies drop to just 41–46%, meaning most days feature onshore or cross-shore flow from the S through WSW quadrants. The waves, while not small, are often chopped up and lack the clean, lined-up quality that makes this beach break. It’s the trade-off season: you may score a fun session if a cold front pushes through, but expect plenty of marginal conditions.

November: Consistent Clean Winter Swell

November continues the high‑quality trend with a 58% offshore wind rate. The swell averages 1.2m in height and a long 13.4s period. The direction remains heavily SSW (78.7%), with SW contributing 14.0% and S 6.0%. Wave heights are concentrated in the 1–1.5m class (58.6%) and 0.5–1m range (10.4%), with some 1.5–2m pulses (9.7%). Offshore winds come predominantly from N (14.5%), NNE (13.0%), and NNW (10.9%), all very light. Onshore wind from the SW and WSW decreases to about 22.9% combined, and those winds are usually light. The consistency of clean, lined‑up waves makes November one of the best months for long, groomed rides. It’s a time to pay attention to the synoptic charts – every passing low brings a fresh pulse of SSW swell and a reinforcing shot of offshore flow.
