Best Surf Season (December - April)

From December through April, the South Pacific storm machine is in full swing, churning out consistent, long-period groundswell that wraps into the west-facing Playa Escondida. Average swell heights range from 0.9 to 1.2m, but don't let the modest numbers fool you – periods of 12–14 seconds deliver powerful, punchy waves that hold up well on the beach breaks. The wind pattern during these months is the real key: northerly and north-easterly breezes dominate, keeping the surface smooth and glassy. With ideal wind conditions 45–46% of the time, you'll find plenty of clean sessions, especially in the early mornings.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the calendar flips to May, the Southern Hemisphere storms intensify, pushing average swell heights to their peak of 1.3–1.4m and periods still swinging in the 13–14 second range. The predominance of SSW swell becomes even more pronounced, flooding the coast with energy. However, the trade-off comes with the wind: a shift towards a more southerly and south-westerly flow brings increased cloud cover and afternoon onshores, dropping the ideal wind percentage to 39–43%. Early mornings and late evenings offer the best windows, when the sea breeze relaxes and the glassy conditions return. This is a solid stretch for surfers craving size, but you'll need to pick your tides.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

The autumn months mark a transitional lull in the Pacific. While swell heights remain respectable at 1.2–1.4m, the average period slips below 13 seconds and the wind consistency deteriorates. The percentage of ideal surfing wind drops to its yearly minimum of 35–38% in September and October, as the intertropical convergence zone meanders north and injects more variable, often westerly winds that put a chop on the face. November sees a slight recovery in wind stats, but the swell period continues to trend downward. These months are for the patient surfer willing to sit through marginal mornings or the occasional clean pulse from a passing cold front.

June: Big Swell, Shiftier Winds

June holds the peak average swell height of 1.4m with a period of 13.7s – still very respectable. The swell mix sees a slight increase in SW energy (10.7%) and even a touch of WSW (0.1%). The wind becomes more variable and less ideal, with ideal conditions down to 39%. Southerly and south-southwest winds (10.7% and 11.3%) are common and can be onshore, while lighter variables from the NE and E still offer clean windows. The surfing is most consistent in the early mornings before the afternoon sea breeze kicks up. June is for those who don't mind a bit of chop to get their fix of big, long-period swell.
