Best Surf Season (April - August)

The heart of the surf calendar at Playa Malibu unfolds from April through August, when the Pacific trade winds stabilize and the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts northward, funneling consistent SSW groundswell into this south-facing pocket beach. During these months, average wave periods hover in the sweet spot between 11 and 13 seconds, delivering punchy, lined-up waves that peel nicely along the cobblestone bottom. Offshore winds from the N and NNW dominate 60 to 77 percent of the time, grooming the faces to glassy perfection. While wave heights rarely exceed 1.5 meters, the combination of clean winds and long-period energy makes for fun, rippable sessions on every tide.

Fair Surf Season (March & September - November)

March marks the transition out of the dry season, with SSW swell becoming more pronounced (37% of the total) and periods stretching to 11.9 seconds, but wind consistency drops to around 49 percent, meaning you’ll need to pick your windows carefully. From September through November, the ITCZ begins its southward retreat, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind days declines to 46–69 percent. Swell remains predominantly from the SSW (75–96%), but periods shorten to 9.7–10.7 seconds, making the waves more sectiony and less powerful. Still, when a crisp N wind lines up with a new swell, these months can deliver hidden gems—especially in early spring and late autumn.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

December, January, and February are the least reliable months for quality surf at Playa Malibu. The North Pacific high-pressure system weakens, allowing more frequent north-northwest windswell to infiltrate the region. While the data shows a high percentage of NNW swell (26% in January), these waves are short-period (averaging 9 seconds) and approach from the north, wrapping poorly into the south-facing beach. Wind conditions are more variable—offshore winds blow only 39–48% of the time in January and February, and onshore S/SSW breezes frequently spoil the surface. Average wave heights remain meager at 0.6–0.7 meters, and periods are often under 10 seconds, resulting in small, choppy conditions. For dedicated surfers, this is the time to focus on other spots or wait for rare south pulses.

January: North Swell Shadow

January sees the highest proportion of NNW-directed swell (26.6%) of any month, but this is a double-edged sword for Playa Malibu. Since the beach faces due south, north-northwest waves are heavily shadowed and arrive as short-period, windswell-like bumps with an average period of just 9.0 seconds. The majority of waves fall into the 0.5–1 meter range, making them small and groveling at best. On the plus side, offshore winds from the north and north-northwest blow 48% of the time, often at speeds of 20–30 kph, which can clean up the surface. However, the swell from the optimal SSW sector only accounts for 12% of the total, and those waves are tiny (0–0.5 meters). Overall, expect inconsistent, small surf with occasional clean windows for a log or funboard.
