Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with strong extratropical storms tracking across the basin and sending powerful, long-period swell towards the Portuguese coast. Praia das Macas, facing NW, is perfectly positioned to capture the dominant WNW to NW groundswell. Average swell heights consistently exceed 2m with periods above 11s, often reaching powerful 13-14s. The percentage of ideal offshore winds (from W, WSW, SW, SSW) is at its annual peak, ranging from 17% in March to 23% in December. High-pressure systems over the continent frequently deliver clean easterly winds, creating glassy conditions. However, the constant parade of lows also means a higher chance of onshore NW winds and stormy conditions. When the stars align, this is prime time for firing, hollow waves at Praia das Macas.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the seasonal transition takes hold, the storm track begins to shift north and the Azores High strengthens. Swell energy diminishes, but still offers fun, rideable waves. Average heights drop to 1.6-2.0m with periods in the 9.9-11.1s range. The window for offshore winds shrinks to around 9-11% as northerly trades dominate. While you can still score waves, the quality is more inconsistent. Early mornings often offer the best chance for glass when land breezes mix with the prevailing flow. September sees a resurgence of swell as autumn begins, making it a solid shoulder month.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest time for surf at Praia das Macas. The North Atlantic storm belt retreats far north, leaving the region under the influence of the Azores High. Swell is predominantly weak, short-period windswell from the NW, with average heights around 1.4-1.5m and periods of 8.5-9.2s. Worse, the prevailing winds are from the north, blowing directly onshore at this NW-facing beach, ruining the wave quality. Ideal offshore wind conditions drop to a mere 3-6%. The surf is small, choppy, and mostly unsurfable, though occasional long-period groundswell from distant storms can sneak in. Don't plan a surf trip around these months.

December: Winter Peaks with Cleanest Winds

December rounds out the year with the highest ideal wind percentage (23%) and massive swell. Average heights of 2.5m (XL) and periods of 12.7s mean the Atlantic is delivering its best. Swell directions are mostly from the NW and W, though there is a slight increase in swells from the S and SW (combined ~2% from SSW+SW) but not dominant. The wind regime is at its best, with frequent offshore flows from the east and southeast. This is thanks to strong high pressure over Europe, channeling land breezes. The surf is often big, powerful, and clean. The only downside is the short, cold days and occasional stormy systems that can close out the beach. But for the dedicated surfer, December is a peak month for quality.
