Summer is the quietest time for surf at Praia das Macas. The North Atlantic storm belt retreats far north, leaving the region under the influence of the Azores High. Worse, the prevailing winds are from the north, blowing directly onshore at this NW-facing beach, ruining the wave quality. Ideal offshore wind conditions drop to a mere 3-6%. The swell direction is predominantly from the NW and W, perfect for this spot. The percentage of ideal offshore winds hits 20%, one of the highest of the year. Northerly winds are less dominant than in spring, and the mix of southerly and westerly winds from passing fronts often leaves behind clean post-frontal conditions. This is the month for scoring epic sessions at Praia das Macas, with barrels, power, and consistency. If you can only pick one month, make it November.
